house. His daughters were my friends, even though they were quite a bit
older. I met them after about five years. They are in degree colleges now, and
their mother was very surprised to see me. She kept telling me how much I
had grown up.
There was a temple and a mosque near my grandfather’s house. You could
hear the Azaan early in the morning, and the bhajans in the evenings. We
used to sleep out in the courtyard. It felt better, being under the stars
without any noise. There were hardly any lights at night, so the night sky was
visible. It was breath-taking. It is still crystal clear in my mind.
That’s what I miss most about my village.
It was peaceful, serene in a way no city or town can ever be. Even the moo
of the neighbor’s cows had a kind of melody to it. I remember going with my
parents to the fields in the evenings and seeing hundreds of fireflies. It
seemed magical.
Life used to slow down in the village and not in a bad way. I learned a lot too
– the proper way of milking a cow and the way to balance a bullock-car. my
favourite was to spot the different constellations. I miss being back there
sometimes. The calmness and tranquillity of a village is unparalleled.
