MUSIC: DEEPER THAN JUST SOUNDS
“Music can change the world, because it can change people” – Bono
It is rightly said when we listen to a song, sometimes we enjoy the music and
sometimes we understand the lyrics. Globally, people lead different lives but
are united by the tunes of their favorite songs. The ability of music to
transcend languages and ethnicities has exposed us to a variety of foreign
cultures along the way.
Music has been an integral part of our lives since primitive times, even
amongst the most isolated of tribes in the world. We now have different
genres of music to suit every occasion in our everyday life, be it heartbreak
or friendship to a wedding or a party.
J K Rowling rightly said ‘Words are the most inexhaustible source of
magic’. Often, pairing strong lyrics with good background music can
produce strong imagery and that is why music today is being used widely in
the in the medical field as a valid therapy. Scientific evidence suggests that
music can have a profound effect on individuals, right from helping improve
the recovery of motor and cognitive functions in stroke patients, reducing
symptoms of depression in dementia patients and even helping patients
undergoing surgery to experience less pain and heal faster.
All of us may not prefer listening to the same song or artist, but we all are
affected by the music we listen to in some or the other way .The kind of
music we listen to almost always depends on how we are feeling at that
very moment and song lyrics offer a unique comfort to us whenever we
wish for it.
Therefore, it can be said that yes, lyrics in a song can affect our lives.
